Brentwood Dentist Provides General/Preventive Dentistry

Dr. Lisbeth Bradley and our staff provide all of the general dentistry treatments you would expect in a family dentistry practice, from fillings and crowns to dental implant restorations. However, our passion is educating patients on how to avoid ever needing those treatments.

Genetics play a role in your oral health, but many dental problems can be prevented through good, old-fashioned brushing, flossing, professional teeth cleaning, and routine dental exams. We promote preventive dentistry as a means of helping avoid cavities, gum disease, tooth loss and abnormal tooth wear.

Professional teeth cleaning- Our registered dental hygienists use instruments to remove plaque and tartar from tooth surfaces and from just below the gum line that can’t be removed through home care. Teeth are polished and flossed. Most patients need to have their teeth professionally cleaned twice a year. Patients who have periodontal issues may require more frequent cleanings.

Dental examination- Teeth are inspected for signs of damage such as chips, cracks, tooth wear and signs of decay. Gums are inspected for recession and signs of periodontal disease.

Digital X-rays- These are powerful diagnostic tools that enable us to see signs of tooth decay and other potential issues between teeth, beneath fillings and below the gums that we cannot see with the naked eye. We generally recommend taking bitewing (upper and lower back teeth) X-rays annually. These may be recommended every six months for patients who are prone to decay. We take a full mouth series about every three years, and a panoramic X-ray every five years.

Oral cancer screening- We inspect the neck and mouth for signs of cancer at each dental exam and feel the tissues in your mouth to check for lumps or other abnormalities.

Dental sealants- This treatment is designed to help prevent tooth decay in children. Sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. In children, the back teeth have deep grooves that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush, and food particles can collect and cause decay. Sealants create a barrier to prevent that. We inspect the sealants at dental appointments to ensure they remain intact and reapply when necessary.

Fluoride treatments- Fluoride is a powerful weapon in the fight against tooth decay, and fluoride treatments benefit children and adults. We can apply fluoride varnish to tooth surfaces following teeth cleaning.

Scaling/root planing- This deep cleaning is for patients with periodontal disease. First, we remove plaque, tartar and bacterial toxins from your teeth and root surfaces. Then we smooth your root surfaces to help prevent future plaque, tartar and bacteria from accumulating beneath your gumline. This enables your gums to heal and reattach themselves more firmly to your teeth.
